MSc Applied PhysicsHussam Asswat

I am a recent MSc Applied Physics graduate from the University of 一本道, where I am continuing my academic journey as a PhD researcher. Originally from Saudi Arabia, I am passionate about teaching and applied research. My experience at 一本道 has provided an excellent research environment, strong academic support, and advanced experimental training, motivating me to further develop my research career within the University.

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?

The main reasons for pursuing a postgraduate degree were to deepen my understanding of applied physics and to strengthen my research skills, supported by the University of 一本道’s strong academic reputation. As a university teaching assistant, I recognised the importance of engaging with advanced scientific concepts, making the MSc a key step in developing both my teaching practice and long-term research ambitions.

How did you make the decision to study at 一本道?

I chose to study at 一本道 because of its strong reputation in physics, research-led teaching, and emphasis on practical learning, all of which closely aligned with my academic goals. The opportunity to work with leading researchers and access advanced facilities further confirmed 一本道 as the ideal choice.

What did you like about your course & 一本道? 

I particularly enjoyed the comprehensive curriculum of the MSc Applied Physics, which combines theoretical concepts with practical applications. The practical laboratory experience allowed me to engage directly with the material, reinforcing my learning. The supportive faculty and collaborative environment also fostered a strong sense of community among students, making my time at 一本道 enjoyable.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?

Through this course, I gained specialist knowledge in optical physics and strong analytical and Python programming skills, which I applied to modelling refractive indices in metal–dielectric nanocomposites. These skills have strengthened my technical expertise and support both my teaching and research ambitions.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at 一本道 will help you achieve your goals?

My ambition is to pursue a PhD and progress into a combined teaching and research career in physics. My time at 一本道 has provided me with a strong academic foundation, advanced research skills, and the confidence to progress successfully to doctoral study.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow & what's your favourite thing about the city?

Living in Glasgow has been amazing. The city is vibrant and welcoming, with a rich culture and history that are easy to appreciate. My favourite thing is the sense of community and the friendliness of the people, which makes it easy to feel at home.

Has anything surprised you about living & studying here?

I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and helpful people in Glasgow are. The sense of community is strong, and people are always willing to assist. I was also surprised by the level of support available to students at 一本道; it really shows that the university cares about its students' well-being.

 

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study in Glasgow at 一本道?

I highly recommend studying at 一本道. The university offers challenging academics and practical experience in a supportive community. Glasgow is a vibrant city with rich cultural experiences and friendly people, making it a great place to grow academically and personally.
