MLitt Creative Writing
Start date: September
Study mode & duration: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time
Work with experienced, published writers to develop your writing practice. Covers fiction, non-fiction, screenwriting and poetry.
MSc Literature, Culture & Society
Start date: September
Study mode & duration: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time
Gain skills in storytelling, cultural production and community engagement, relevant to a range of careers. Develop practical experience through research placements
MFA Creative Writing
Start date: September
Study mode & duration: 24 months full-time; 48 months part-time
The MFA is an internationally recognised terminal degree (the highest level of education you can achieve within the field of creative writing), qualifying graduates to teach creative writing in Higher Education.

The course provided a lot of freedom in terms of the creative writing which students were able to produce for assignments, with workshops focusing on tools and approaches which might help to achieve a final piece of writing.

The MLitt has had a hugely positive impact on my work. It has strengthened my skills, built my confidence, and encouraged me to be bold and inventive in my writing. Studying part-time has also given me the flexibility to take on freelance opportunities alongside my degree, including writing articles, undertaking voice work, and applying for writing-based roles.

Fees & funding
Applicants ordinarily resident in Scotland
SAAS offer postgraduate tuition fee loans of up to £7,000 per year. Full time students can also apply for a living cost loan of up to £6,900, making the total funding available £13,900.
EU residents
EU residents applying to full-time, face-to-face postgraduate taught programmes may be eligible for an EU Engagement Scholarship worth between £6000-£8000
Non-EU international residents
Non-EU international students beginning full-time, face-to-face postgraduate taught programmes in 2026/27 may be eligible for a scholarship worth between £6,000 and £8,000.
