What is biomedical engineering?
Biomedical engineering is the link between technology and medicine. It’s all about exploring and finding solutions to medical problems using engineering, to the benefit of society. From 3D printed heart valves to systems designed to save limbs on-site, biomedical engineering has never been more creative and exciting.
Studying biomedical engineering gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in the world. As populations age, we'll need engineers who can think creatively and apply engineering principles spanning a range of subjects – electronic and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics and more – to modern-day health concerns.
Salary guide
- jobs in the National Health Service (NHS) consist of nine pay bands and are usually covered by the . Salaries for medical engineering technicians range from £24,907 to £30,615 (Band 5). At a specialist level, salaries rise to between £31,365 and £37,890 (Band 6).
- with significant experience and in a team manager position, salaries can range from £38,890 to £44,503 (Band 7). Salaries may reach higher than this if head of department or consultant level is reached.
- salaries for biomedical engineers in the private sector are comparable to those in the NHS, ranging between £21,000 and £45,000 depending on experience and level of responsibility.
